Expert opinions for hydropower plants: environmental, nature conservation and species protection aspects

The preparation of comprehensive expert reports plays a decisive role in the approval process for hydropower plants. Our focus is on environmental, nature conservation and species protection aspects to ensure that hydropower projects are in harmony with nature and the legal requirements.

1. environmental, nature conservation and species protection reports:

The preparation of comprehensive expert reports is of fundamental importance before an authority grants approval for hydropower plant projects. The focus here is on the aspects of environmental protection, nature conservation and species protection.

2. species protection reports:

Special attention is paid to the species protection report, which analyzes the impact of the planned hydropower plants on local animal and plant species. Protective measures and requirements are developed to ensure the preservation of biodiversity.

3. biotope mapping:

The biotope mappings record the existing habitats and their ecological significance in the vicinity of the hydropower plants. This serves to identify and assess potential impacts on the environment at an early stage.

4. FFH management planning:

As part of hydropower plant projects, FFH management plans are also drawn up to ensure that the objectives of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive (FFH) are met.

5. expert opinions for construction measures:

In addition to environmental assessments, we offer expert reports for construction measures, including environmental reports, landscape conservation plans (LBP) and ecological construction monitoring. These document and evaluate the environmental impact of construction projects.

6. monitoring (long-term observations):

Long-term observations as part of monitoring are crucial in order to record long-term effects on the environment and to be able to make adjustments if necessary.

7 Ecological survey and assessment:

A comprehensive ecological survey and assessment of terrestrial and aquatic habitats forms the basis for the sustainable planning and implementation of hydropower projects.

8. consulting services on ecological and nature conservation issues:

Our experts also offer comprehensive consulting services on ecological and nature conservation issues. We are at your side throughout the entire planning and approval process to ensure environmentally friendly and sustainable implementation.

Our services and expertise

We have been involved in the planning and implementation of hydropower utilization and river engineering projects for many years. Our research and planning projects on the use of watercourses and hydropower generation develop future-oriented solutions for the environmentally compatible design of these uses.

In detail, we offer the following services for approval projects:

    • Environmental impact study (EIS):
    • Environmental impact assessment / EIA report
    • River engineering development concepts and planning
    • Impact regulation / landscape conservation planning
    • Natura 2000 impact assessment/exception test
    • Species protection assessment/exception test
    • Water Framework Directive reports (WFD)
    • Implementation planning and environmental construction supervision

In addition, we offer grid analyses for water grids and prepare EEG reports to ensure the future viability of your plant. Our aim is to make a contribution to the sustainable use of hydropower by providing qualified environmental support for projects and preparing comprehensive expert reports.

EEG expert opinion for hydropower plants

Is your hydropower plant ready for the future? We can help you!

The Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) from 2017 provides for a remuneration of 12.4 cents/kWh for operators of hydropower plants if certain criteria are met.

These criteria can be met by the following measures:

  • Investment in efficiency improvement measures: Modernization measures that do not require approval under water legislation and achieve an increase in efficiency of at least 10%.
  • Investment in fish ladders: Measures to improve fish passability along watercourses.

Both measures can be planned and implemented by us. We will be happy to provide you with an expert opinion for your grid operator that proves the 10% increase in efficiency after implementation and thus ensures the 12.4 cent remuneration (in degression) for your system for 20 years.
